20x24 self portrait polaroids that are crisp and pretty incredible to look at. she seems like she has a strong interest in the process with her extensive pulls and abstraction work, presenting us with the raw components of what the photograph is made of, something i touched on attempting to do with a constructed negative process. she is actually an alum of KCAI, i have no idea how i've never heard of her before today.

"These pictures physically are pure photography, like Talbot- light and process only in the late 20th century as opposed to the 19th. What they represent is a challenge to our previously prescribed historical and cultural expectation that a photograph will narrate, describe, and document."

i've spent some time thinking about the department i'm in and how frustrating it really is. it's sad to me that we haven't created and cultivated a better environment to work in and the amount of apathy or disregard that has taken its place. we would be much bigger artists, and people in general, if we invested the amount of time and focus we should into where we are and what we are doing. it's only as much of a joke as you make it. take a second and think about the money you're spending and what you plan to do when you leave. i can't help but feel as if photography is just something people do here on the side. a hobby or some kind of obligation for what they have to do to get a degree instead of something that they are passionate about. this isn't high school. this isn't community college. this is supposed to be what you're doing with the rest of your life. so don't walk out of critiques, talk during them. don't spend your night off on facebook, research something. don't give me excuses about being so tired your brain can't work during your critique. don't sit around and complain about how much you think our department sucks and then cut class and not contribute. you're supposed to be here for a reason. take a second and really think about it. what's yours?

i found out about Nick Gentry through a newsfeed that i'm a part of. he does a lot of painting on top of recycled floppy disks and cassette tapes which is really interesting. a new perspective on recording with technology, perhaps. but i've wanted to do something similar to this in the darkroom, maybe this will motivate me to do it.

i just happened to see this movie on the shelves at blockbuster and picked it up on a whim. i'm really impressed by it. Sam Rockwell is great and so is the score (because everything Clint Mansell touches turns to gold.) it also touches on a lot of things i've been thinking about in my work. if you haven't picked it up, do it.

i have to give a thesis presentation to an auditorium full of people come march 1st. and because of that as well as a conversation i had with A. Lovell-Smith (kind of) i've been thinking a lot about my artwork, art in general and why i make it.

i feel as if art is a type of problem solving tool, for me. i find some kind of a problem that i don't have an answer for and then try to work it out through some kind of creative means, photographs, installations, prints. the end product is my solution or at least reconciliation with the issue, visible to whoever wants to see it. a sort of negotiation to being alive, existing and perceiving. i feel as if Bob Irwin clarifies this concept well.

"To be an artist is not a matter of making paintings or objects at all. What we are really dealing with is our state of consciousness and the shape of our perception."

i've compiled a list of ideas that my work revolves around in different veins: kinetic qualities of photography, process, the artist's presence, image as object, identity, time and event, space and environment, perception and metaphysics. the talk will cover work from my junior year until now, most of what's posted on this blog through my current thesis work. it's strange to see where i've been in relationship to where i'm going. how the last eight years of making images could have brought me here. i guess i'll have to wait and see.
